As we prepare for the rainy season in the Philippines, it got me thinking—life’s a lot like the weather, unpredictable and full of storms. But just like how we prepare for typhoons, we can get ready for life’s unexpected twists too.
Here are some reminders to help us get through rough times.
Keep your wallet safe
Money troubles can add extra stress to an already challenging situation. Take steps to safeguard your finances by setting aside money for emergencies. Even if you can only save a little bit each month, having a financial safety net can provide a sense of security during uncertain times. Start small, build an emergency fund, and watch out for those budget leaks.
Stay flexible
Remember, sometimes the best plans are the ones you make on the go. Things don’t always go according to plan. Instead of resisting change, embrace it. Stay open-minded and adaptable, and you’ll be better equipped to handle whatever life throws your way.
TLC time
Just like plants need water, you need some love and care too. Take time for yourself—good food, good sleep, and good vibes. Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s survival. Taking care of yourself isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity. Make self-care a priority through activities that nourish your body, mind, and soul. Invest in activities that help you feel your best.
Count your blessings
Even in the stormiest weather, there’s always a silver lining. When life feels overwhelming, it can be easy to focus on the negative. Take a moment to shift your perspective by focusing on the things you’re grateful for. Whether it’s a sunny day, a kind gesture from a stranger, or a delicious meal, there’s always something to be thankful for.
Grow through it
Life’s storms can be tough, but they’re also a chance to grow. Embrace the challenge, learn from the tough times, and come out stronger on the other side. Difficult times can be valuable learning experiences if you approach them with the right mindset. Instead of dwelling on the hardships, look for opportunities for growth and self-improvement. Whether it’s developing resilience, learning new skills, or gaining a deeper understanding of yourself, every challenge you face can help you become a stronger, more resilient person.
Stay true to you
When life gets wild, hold onto what matters most—your values and dreams. They’re like your compass, guiding you through even the roughest seas. In the midst of chaos, it’s easy to lose sight of who you are and what you stand for. Stay grounded by staying true to your core values and beliefs. They’ll provide a sense of stability and direction, helping you navigate through even the stormiest of waters.
Let go and let live
Some things are beyond your control—like the weather. Learn to accept what you can’t change, and let go of what’s holding you back. It’s like clearing the skies after a storm. Trying to control everything is a surefire way to add stress to your life. Instead of fighting against the things you can’t change, practice acceptance and surrender. Focus your energy on the things you can control, and let go of the rest.
Reach out
When the storm clouds won’t lift, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s a chat with a friend or reaching out to a pro, there’s no shame in asking for a little extra support. You don’t have to brave life’s storms alone. Reach out to friends, family, or professionals for support when you need it. Whether you need a listening ear, practical advice, or professional guidance, there are people out there who care about you and want to help you through tough times.
A Real-Life Storm: Finding Purpose After Job Loss
Recently, I had the opportunity to speak at an event for employees of a big hotel that is permanently closing. A lot of employees are about to lose their jobs, and I was invited to talk about career transitioning. These employees are not just going through a rainstorm—they’re facing a major superstorm. Yet, in the face of this adversity, people are rallying together to support them.
During my lecture, I shared my own struggles and the storms I had to endure. I told them how I found my true purpose and passion after surviving my own job loss. Losing my job was one of the best things that happened to me, since I had to dig deep in myself and find out what I really wanted to do—teaching, which I’ve been doing for 16 years now.
This experience highlighted the importance of reaching out, whether you’re the one who needs help or the one offering it. Supporting each other during tough times can make all the difference.
Remember, tough times don’t last forever, but the resilience you build does. So hold tight, stay true to yourself, and know that brighter days are just beyond the horizon, waiting to greet you with open arms.
