ARE YOU WAITING TO BE HAPPY?

I’ll be happy when I get promoted.
I’ll be happy when I earn more.
I’ll be happy when life becomes easier.
I’ll be happy when my problems disappear.

Sound familiar?

Lately, I’ve been immersed in Marci Shimoff’s Happy for No Reason certification program, and it has given me a lot to reflect on personally. Some of the sessions happen at 3 a.m. Philippine time, but surprisingly, I look forward to them. The insights have been gently reshaping the way I think about success, fulfillment, and the way we live our everyday lives. One idea, in particular, has stayed with me ever since.

Happiness is not a reward we receive after we achieve our goals. It is the foundation we need in order to achieve them.

That simple thought made me pause. Because if we are not careful, many of us spend years postponing happiness.

After decades of working with people from all walks of life, I’ve noticed something interesting. Even when people finally achieve what they once prayed for, happiness often moves to another future condition. There is always another goal. Another problem. Another reason to delay joy.

And that is why the saying, “It’s about the journey, not the destination,” carries so much truth.

If we do not learn how to appreciate life while we are building it, we may arrive at our destination exhausted, disconnected, and still searching for happiness.

Please don’t misunderstand me. Goals are important. Dreams matter. Growth matters.

But happiness was never meant to be something you schedule for later.

Sometimes we become so focused on what is missing that we stop noticing what is already beautiful in our lives.

The quiet mornings
A good conversation
A meal shared with family
Your dog is excited to see you
A message from a friend
Your plants growing
A peaceful night’s sleep
The simple gift of another day

These moments may seem ordinary, but together, they form a meaningful life.

So today, I want to ask you a few questions gently.

Are you happy now?
Or are you waiting to become happy later on?
Is your happiness attached to a certain goal, person, achievement, or timeline?
And if so, why can’t you allow yourself to feel happiness now, even in small ways?

One simple exercise I encourage you to try is this:
At the end of the day, write down three things that made you smile, feel grateful, or feel alive.

Nothing grand is required.
Maybe your coffee tasted especially good.
Maybe you laughed at something silly.
Maybe you finally had time to rest.

This practice slowly trains the mind to notice joy rather than constantly chase it elsewhere.

Another question worth reflecting on is this:
What can I appreciate about my life today, exactly as it is?

Not perfect.
Not complete.
Not problem-free.
Just as it is.

Because happiness is not the absence of difficulty, it is the ability to stay connected to peace, gratitude, and meaning even as life unfolds. And perhaps that is the real secret.

We do not need to wait for life to become perfect before we allow ourselves to feel joy.

We can choose it now.
In small moments
In ordinary days
In the middle of becoming

As I continue learning through the Happy for No Reason program, I am reminded that happiness is not something outside of us that we must someday earn. It is something we can begin practicing today.

Right here.
Right now.
