As the year winds down, it’s natural to feel a mix of emotions—pride in what you’ve accomplished, regret over what you didn’t, and anticipation for what’s ahead. If you’re anything like me, this time of year is both exciting and overwhelming. There’s a rush to tie up loose ends, reflect on the past 12 months, and plan for the next.
I’ll admit, I’ve had years where I avoided reflecting altogether because it felt like facing a harsh spotlight on my unmet goals. But I’ve also learned that reflection doesn’t have to be daunting—it can actually be empowering.
Reflection isn’t about dwelling on the past; it’s about learning from it and using those lessons to move forward. Think of it as a personal check-in—a chance to reconnect with yourself before stepping into a new year.
Today, I want to share five questions that have helped me close the year with clarity and purpose. Let’s do this together.
What were my biggest wins this year?
Too often, we focus on what went wrong and forget to celebrate what went right. I know I’ve been guilty of brushing off my accomplishments, thinking they weren’t “big enough.” But every step forward matters.
Take a moment to list your victories—big and small. Did you finally set aside time for self-care? Take a brave step in your career? Maybe you strengthened a relationship or handled a tough situation with grace.
Small wins may include regular massages, going to the barber shop or salon to feel good about yourself. It may include being able to take a 30-min walk. These need to be celebrated too.
Why it matters: Recognizing your wins boosts your confidence and reminds you of your resilience. It’s a way of saying, “Hey, I did that!”
What challenges did I face, and what did I learn from them?
Life throws curveballs, and this year was no different. I had my fair share of unexpected challenges—some that felt overwhelming in the moment. But looking back, those moments taught me some of my greatest lessons.
Think about the obstacles you faced. Maybe you had to navigate a difficult relationship, a career setback, or even moments of self-doubt. What did these challenges reveal about your strength, patience, or adaptability?
I had several self-doubts this year as well. Am I too old to learn Artificial Intelligence? Will I still be able to develop myself mentally? Will my school still give me a teaching load? And to my surprise, the answer is YES. Learning is up to you.
Why it matters: Challenges shape us. By reflecting on them, you can find meaning in the struggles and carry those lessons forward.
What am I most grateful for this year?
Gratitude has a way of putting everything into perspective. I remember a moment earlier this year when I was stuck in traffic, feeling frustrated about all the tasks piling up on my to-do list. Then, out of nowhere, my favorite song started playing on the radio, and it made me smile. That small moment reminded me to pause and appreciate life’s little joys.
What brought you joy this year? Who supported you? What experiences or simple moments made your heart feel full?
What I am most grateful for this year is my good health. Despite several visits to the different doctors that I go to, I am A-OK! Remember, the greatest wealth is health.
Why it matters: Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s missing to what’s already abundant in your life.
What’s something I wanted to do but didn’t, and why?
Let’s be honest—there’s always that one goal we didn’t quite get to. For me, it was finishing a personal project I’d been excited about at the start of the year. Life got busy, and it fell to the wayside.
Instead of beating yourself up, ask why it didn’t happen. Was it a lack of time or motivation? Or did your priorities shift, and it no longer felt important?
I must confess. My goal of publishing my fifth book, “How to be Grateful When Life Throws You S**t,” this year did not push through. Many things happened. Life happened. It is still my goal and I am determined to publish it in 2025. I didn’t beat myself up for the delay. I clearly understood the “why.”
Why it matters: This question isn’t about guilt—it’s about clarity. Understanding the “why” helps you decide whether to carry that goal into the next year or let it go.
What do I want to focus on in the year ahead?
After reflecting on your wins, challenges, gratitude, and unmet goals, it’s time to look forward. What’s one area of your life you’d like to prioritize? For me, it’s cultivating more balance—making time for both work and play.
Is it health, relationships, career, or personal growth? Pick one focus that excites you and feels meaningful.
Why it matters: Setting an intention gives you direction. It’s like choosing your North Star—it helps you navigate the year with purpose.

Reflection doesn’t have to be perfect, just honest. I’ve learned that even a little time spent looking inward can spark big changes. So, let’s take a moment to appreciate how far we’ve come. Celebrate the wins, learn from the challenges, and step into the new year with intention.
Here’s to a year well lived—and an even better one ahead. You’ve got this, and I’m cheering you on every step of the way.
