Because of all the lockdowns and quarantines, a lot of people have been doing webinars and online programs since last year. Social media has been filled with posts about achievements of certifications, licenses and diplomas.
With all the online sources out there, how can we you choose the right ones for us?
Can these certifications really help us in getting a job or a promotion?
Here are some tips to level up your career through certification courses and programs.
1. Choose courses that will give you an edge in your career.
Study what you want based on your passion and career. Do as many as you can.
Lately, I’ve been focused on upgrading my credentials as a coach. I’m proud of my recent certification as an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) from the International Coaching Federation (ICF).
I’ve also been attending a program entitled, “Happy for No Reason.” Because it’s an international program, I attend the video conference at 3:00 in the morning. The topic is something I wanted to personally learn more about and teach, especially in these days when it’s hard to be happy.
Right now, there are hundreds or even thousands of coaches all over the world. This is part of how I differentiate myself from them.
2. Take advantage of FREE materials.
If you’re unemployed or you don’t have the money, utilize the free resources out there. Check out Udemy, Coursera, or other platforms that offer free online classes.
It doesn’t have to be complex webinars, online courses, or certification programs. Learn practical and work-related skills from YouTube. Learn to type faster. Develop an excellent mastery of Microsoft Office. Enhance your conversation skills. Expand your vocabulary. These are valuable things that can be learned online without cost.
There are also companies with LinkedIn Premium programs. Inquire with your employer.
Utilize what you have. It doesn’t have to cost money.
3. Have the courage to invest in yourself.
If you want to learn from the best, be prepared to invest.
If you have the money, don’t be afraid to spend it on the best courses, mentors, and schools of thought out there. These will help propel you in your career.
4. Look for programs that are globally recognized.
Search for credible resources, schools, or program proponents that are widely known for what they teach. Be careful and choose wisely. Do your research, especially if you will be investing your hard-earned money.
My ACC credential as a coach is from the International Coaching Federation, a leading global organization for coaches and coaching. Out of the 100 coaches under the ICF Philippines, I’m one of the 22 with this certification.
5. Obtain the skills and knowledge FOR REAL.
Focus on genuinely learning something. The goal shouldn’t be “for the sake of acquiring the certification.” Achieve a legitimate credential. Don’t let your knowledge or skills exist only on paper.
Besides, you’ll be in trouble if you can’t perform what’s in your resume.

Certifications under your educational and professional background will certainly upgrade your credentials. Present and future employers will see this as an advantage. Upskill and upgrade yourself. It helps you and the work that you do. It provides you with more tools to move forward and succeed in your career.
