MASAKIT BANG MAGMAHAL? (DOES IT HURT TO LOVE?)

Have you ever loved someone or something so deeply that it hurts? You know that heavy, aching feeling when you give your all, but your heart just keeps breaking.

Lately, I’ve been hearing a different kind of heartbreak whispered in coffee shops, coaching sessions, and online: “Ang hirap mahalin ng Pilipinas.”

If you’ve said those exact words, or felt that quiet pang in your chest, take a deep breath. You are definitely not alone.

The way things are going, more and more Filipinos are packing up their dreams and wanting to start fresh somewhere else. And honestly? Can you really blame them? But, the rest of the world isn’t exactly peaceful right now, either. Every country is fighting its own battles and dealing with its own crises.

Sure, packing up and building a new life abroad is an option. It’s a big risk, but for those who can make it happen, it can bring great rewards. But let’s be real: leaving is a huge privilege.

What about the majority who don’t have that choice? What about those who choose to stay because our roots are here? What about those who continue to love through all the daily struggles?

If staying feels too painful right now, how do we protect our sanity? Here are three gentle ways we can cope:

Take care of your inner world.

You cannot pour from an empty cup. Pause and step away from the toxic noise on your phone. Protect your mental space. Practice daily gratitude. And, remember: you might not control what’s happening out there, but you are always in charge of how you respond.

Take practical steps in your outer world.

Hope is an action word. Bring a bit of stability into your life by focusing on what you can manage. Can you start a small side hustle to boost your income? Can you practice a bit of thriftiness to build a small safety net? Small financial habits give you back a sense of control and keep panic away.

Demand a bigger blanket, starting with your community.

We often feel helpless because our national problems are so big. For the longest time, we’ve been told to mamaluktot (curl up tightly) because the blanket of resources is short. No! Instead of just shivering and fighting over scraps, we need to ask for better systems. You don’t need to rally in the streets to make a difference; true change starts with how you show up for your family and your local community.

My third book, "ASK FOR A BIGGER BLANKET," encourages all Filipinos from all walks of life to dream bigger.

And finally, if you do decide to leave, please look back. Reach out and do what you can to share a little love with the home you left behind.

Wherever you are in your journey today, remember that loving—whether it’s a person or our country—will always carry a bit of pain. But please, don’t let the pain harden your heart. Choose to care, choose to hope, and remember to take care of yourself along the way. We’ll get through this, my friend.
